Connie Bejarano, or CoBe is a painter, ceramicist based in Los Angeles. She is also an archeologist whose art is particularly inspired by ancient objects and classical myths. These pieces include small earthenware sculptures, votive offerings and crafted household objects that might have served multiple purposes: utilitarian, decorative and symbolic. Art is, and always has been, deeply personal. Historians and archaeologists regularly discover past peoples' lost treasures. CoBe continues to be inspired by the artifacts that held meaning for people of the past.
Why do we create objects?
We create objects for utilitarian, religious and decorative purposes. A defining feature of humanity is the human compulsion to express our awe at the world around us. Throughout history, humans have sought to express the range of human experience.
Currently, I have been creating monsters. Throughout history, cultures all over the world have used monsters to represent a variety of psychological matters: fear, the unknown, the parts of ourselves that we keep hidden from view, the parts of ourselves that we may not like, parts of ourselves that we do like, ambition, greed, and a myriad of other things. I love creating new monsters which add to the story of my work and life. It represents the constant use of the past and the present to create the future.
